Published Reviews: The Everyday Vegan

A flavor feast! This is a book for anyone who loves food and wants to be healthy, with great recipes that are easy and totally tasty.

One of the most beautifully laid out cookbooks I have ever encountered. It has much more information than you might expect in a cookbook, split into comprehensive and easy to use chapters. I own many vegan cookbooks, and Dreena Burton's The Everyday Vegan is by far one of the very best. I highly recommend this book for other "everyday vegans" who are looking for easy recipes in harmony with their healthy lifestyle.

I would definitely recommend picking up a copy of The Everyday Vegan. Her recipes are easy to follow, well explained, and offer great suggestions and variations on the side panels. This is a must have if you like to entertain as her recipes are easily presented to look and taste great on any dinner table! Now I'm just waiting for her to come out with another book!

This book is a great "all-rounder" with ideas and recipes to meet every need. In addition to the entrees and side dishes, there are recipes for many appetizers and munchies, sauces, gravies, and salad dressings. Sweets lovers are especially well catered for with over 24 recipes for puddings, cookies, cakes and pies. The sections on basic ingredients, cooking and preparation techniques are useful for anyone new to preparing healthy vegan food. There are seven different menu plans, quick meal ideas and ideas for potlucks, picnics and kids’ birthday parties.

A sharp-looking vegan cookbook with a great layout. The book starts with about fifty pages of introductory material, to get you set up and comfortable in a vegan kitchen. Includes nutritional info with each recipe, including calories, fat, and carbs. Plus, there's a lengthy dessert section, as well as an eight-page insert with full colour photographs.

The Creamy Mushroom Risotto (is) lush with mushrooms, red peppers, and arborio rice. Mostly, I preferred Burton’s no-fuss casual dining recipes, like the red pepper, artichoke, and sun-dried tomato Mediterranean Tortilla Pizza to the more complicated dishes like the Soul-Full Chili and the Cornmeal Chili Bake. What I especially liked about The Everyday Vegan is that a lot of the recipes appear to be pretty flexible, so that you can add or omit and ingredient or two to suit your individual tastes. Burton has designed these recipes for daily use; they’re easy enough to put together, and there’s enough variety to suit every taste.

It's the recipes that convince naysayers that vegan food can be flavorful (and full of protein). A lightened up pesto sauce combines basil and roasted garlic with creamy tofu. Maple Banana Loaf uses soy milk, whole wheat and kamut flours and pure maple syrup to delicious effect.

These are recipes that could hold their own in any kitchen and they encompass all aspects of the diet: from appetizers...to loads of entrees...great side dishes, as well as cookies cakes and other desserts.

What makes this book more interesting than your run-of-the-mill cookbook is the extra information it contains. The recipes are easy to follow and each one has highlighted sidebars that contain extra information such as substitution ideas. The chickpea mash stew was straightforward to prepare and tasted as if it would have taken more time to make. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to experiment with a healthier way of eating.

From appetizers to desserts all the dishes look amazing, and with so many recipes there is more than enough food to make. A few tasty picks are the Spicy Thai Stew, Lentil Miso Patties… Amazing Creamy Caesar Dressing. Burton shows how easy it is to make a variety of tasty vegan dishes without compromising one’s health. This is definitely a book with "Recipes & Lessons for Living the Vegan Life".

She knows what we want to eat… Burton is just as persuasive with desserts, whipping up lemon "cream" pies with soft tofu, and caramel-chip bars that get their gooeyness from vanilla soymilk. Anecdotal information about friends and family makes a powerful case for easing out of eating meat.

All user-friendly and practical recipes with easy-to-follow steps. This one is a winner!

Customer Feedback: The Everyday Vegan

I recently bought The Everyday Vegan and have to say that hands down it is the most useful cookbook I have ever owned. I appreciate your innovative ideas on using easily found ingredients. Between your recipes and recipes that they inspire me to invent, I’m sure we will have a varied, fulfilling diet.

I just bought your book and what a wonderful book it is. I am vegetarian but now ready to try some vegan recipes. There are a lot of books out there but I thought yours was so down to earth and very readable! I made the Orange and Blueberry Crunch cake at the weekend which I loved and my friends and kids loved too!

I just love your book it provides so much information and, amazingly, all the recipes work first time! Your mushroom phyllo pie is a family favorite. I have recommended and given your book to many friends who express an interest in living a healthier life, I find it is the best one for beginners.

I tried your "Soulful Chili" the other night and it was perfectly delightful! Just the right amount of hot, yet tangy too! Your new book sounds wonderful – especially the focus on babies and toddlers! I’ll be sure to order my copy and it would make a great gift for new parents too I’m sure.

I made the Triple-Layer Chocolate Cream Cake and it was a roaring success at two luncheons we hosted this week. Thanks for this healthy alternative and the chocolate 'pleasure fix' it gave us.

Fred

Yesterday we made chickpea mash stew. The colour, the smell, and the taste were amazing. I am really enjoying trying all the easy to follow recipes. Thanks a lot - it really helps my transition to being a vegan.

Tiffany

The Everyday Vegan is a great addition for us since we no longer have to substitute for butter, cheese etc. as we have for so many vegetarian cookbooks. Thanks for the good recipes and helpful hints.

Roger

Wonderful book! I have not been able to find a good vegan book until now. I find the recipes easy and delicious. I just made the cinnamon cornmeal muffins and they actually look like muffins, not rocks.

I LOVE this book! The fact that the author uses no hydrogenated oils and very little refined flours/sugars convinced me to buy the book. I am SO GLAD that I did. Not only are the recipes vegan, using healthful ingredients, they are also very straightforward, using ingredients found in the average person's pantry/refrigerator. Everything I've made has turned out great, and was very easy prepare. You might want to consider buying 2 copies right away - one for yourself and one to give as a gift!
